Television showing movie streaming options, sat on a modern white television stand against a white wall

Do you love a good movie? There’s nothing quite like seeing a thrilling action movie or delve into the enchantment of another world on the big screen. What if you had a garden cinema room on your own property? With a garden cinema room you wouldn’t have to buy tickets or stand in a queue. You can pause the movie and go to the toilet whenever you want. You won't be disturbed by anyone talking over the film - or you and your friends can talk through it without annoying anyone else! Plus, your snack selection isn’t limited to the overpriced options they offer at the cinema. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it? You can achieve cinema quality in your back garden if you consider these 7 simple steps.

  1. Location
  2. Insulation
  3. Projector or TV screen
  4. Seating
  5. Wiring
  6. Decorate
  7. Snacks!

1. Location

The first thing is to consider the location of your cinema room. Is there anything noisy nearby that will interrupt your movie-watching experience? Will you be near a busy road, or near the noisy laundry room of your own house? Alternatively, is there anyone close by that you might disturb? Imagine how far the noise of explosions from your favourite James Bond movie would travel. You might even use your garden cinema room to watch football or other sporting events. In which case, you and your friends could end up being a nuisance to your neighbours. You must also consider sunlight - there is a reason that cinemas are dark. You won’t be able to see the action very well if there is outside light interfering with the screen or projector. Try to place the garden room so that the doors are not going to be in direct sunlight during key movie watching times. A simple way to avoid sunlight is to include blackout blinds or curtains in your budget.

2. Insulation

Any garden cinema room is already perfect to enjoy during the summer. You can open the doors to let in the breeze and enjoy an outdoor movie experience. But, you’ll want to be able to enjoy your cinema room all year round. For that, you’ll need to make sure the room is well insulated to keep it cosy in the winter. At Habin, our prefabricated garden rooms are built with this in mind. Our prefab walls contain high quality insulation, and exceed building regulations on airtightness levels. So you won't be bothered by pesky draughts and heat loss, and they'll retain warmth for colder days.

3. Projector or TV Screen?

Now comes a big decision, should you choose a projector or a TV for your viewing pleasure? Projectors have long been a top choice for outdoor garden cinemas. They are a portable option that can be brought out in the best weather. But, in your completely weather-sealed and climate-controlled cinema room, a TV screen is from the elements. Also, consider that projectors need to be far enough away from the wall to get sharp focus. Check out how to figure out the optimal distance here. If you only have enough space for a smaller garden room, then you might not be able to get good projection quality. If a projector is your preferred choice, then check where you will install it. Most garden rooms will have a sloped, or pitched roof. For a ceiling mount projector, you’ll need an adjustable mount. Otherwise, you'll end up with a wonky projection! Another factor is the sound. Modern big-screen TVs come with some pretty impressive speakers. Projectors can also have built-in speakers, but you might need something with more power to do that huge screen justice. If you want extra speakers, then decide where you want them, and what sort of wiring you will need to get it connected. If you have plans to host summer movie nights, then you can open up the doors to extend your audience outside. In which case, the screen will need to be on a wall that can be seen from outside. For the perfect result, you might want to pick the position of your screen first and plan the layout of the room around it. After all, the screen is the star of this show!

4. Seating

Next, it’s time to think about your seating. How posh do you want to get? You can go simple with a few bean bags. They're incredibly comfortable, but they might cause you to fall asleep! You don't want to miss a crucial point in the film! You might enjoy the comfort of your home and opt for a sofa to match your living room. In which case, a 2 or 3 seater may be the best choice. If you're planning family movie nights with the kids, then a larger corner sofa is perfect for cosying up together. If you're going for a cinematic experience with cinema seats, then you still have a few choices. Classic folding cinema chairs are available to buy individually, or even in rows. If you like a retro cinema feel then you could source some real seating from an old cinema. There are lots of good choices for cinema seating. But, chances are, if you're planning a garden cinema room, you've already got your eye on some electric reclining cinema seats. Most luxury cinema seating will have a wealth of options and accessories. Look for seats with drink coolers and built-in refrigerators. For a bit of over-the-top luxury, you might want to choose one with a seat warmer or a massage function! When shopping for a reclining cinema chair, make sure there is enough space behind the seat. Some cinema chairs have an incline feature where the back-rest needs a small amount of room away from a wall. This may be a good option for your garden room. Your seating needs to work well with the position of your cinema screen.

5. Wiring

It’s best to consider your wiring needs before installing your new cinema room. Habin garden rooms are prefabricated with sockets and wiring already in place. This ensures the build quality is perfect, and there's no need for you to invalidate your guarantee by ripping open the wall panels to add your own wiring. We encourage you to plan your wiring needs carefully. Make sure you know how many sockets your home cinema will need, and where you need them placed. With physical media becoming less used, you might want to stream your movies to your TV or projector. We can organise installing sockets and internal wiring for CAT6 cables. With this, you can organise connecting your garden room to your home internet connection. This might also be useful if you're planning a garden office room. It’s important to think about everything (down to electric chairs) before you buy a Habin garden room. You might even want to add some atmospheric lighting to enhance your movie watching experience. All Habins will have wiring preinstalled to your specifications, and will include a junction box outside. Your electrician will then be able to connect to your home so you don't need to have a costly new electricity supply . At your meeting with our Habin consultant, you can plan everything out to get an accurate quote.

6. Decorate

Of course, you can decorate your cinema room any way you please, but there are some basics that we recommend. Reflective surfaces and light colours can detract from the movie by making it harder to see. Black can be a little foreboding but stick with darker, muted colours and always choose matte paint to minimise reflections. Our garden rooms come with laminate flooring as standard, which may be reflective. Simply cover up the area between you and the screen with an attractive throw rug to complement your space.

7. Snacks!

No movie-watching experience is complete without the snacks! At the minimum, you’ll want an area for food storage and a little fridge for cold drinks. If you're planning a dedicated movie watching space, the last thing you want is to be going back in to your house to restock drinks and snacks! If you want to fully utilise the space, consider installing a home bar. Keep your favourite beverages behind the bar for easy access. To truly complete your own cinema, try having a popcorn machine to hand. That way you always have a tasty snack, and fill the room with a classic cinema aroma!
